For the third year in a row, Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos topped Forbes’ list of the richest Americans, while the ranking of U.S. President Donald Trump plummeted as the coronavirus pandemic hit his office buildings, hotels, and resorts, the magazine said on Tuesday.

The Forbes 400 list’s aggregate wealth rose to a record US$3.2 trillion, as the wealthiest Americans continued to do well amid the pandemic crippling the economy, which is short of around 11 million jobs relative to where it was in February.

Eric Yuan, Zoom Video Communications’ chief executive, who has become ubiquitous in the work-from-home era, was one of 18 newcomers on the list, with a net worth of US$11 billion.

Trump’s ranking dropped from No. 275 last year to No. 352, and his net worth fell from US$3.1 billion to US$2.5 billion, as office buildings, hotels and resorts suffered during the pandemic. His Trump Organization owns all three categories of properties.

Trump has refused to release his tax records.

In an interview with Reuters TV, Kerry Dolan, assistant managing editor of wealth at Forbes, said the annual list could serve as a way to track the country’s richest people who have the most influence.

“As a society, we all should know who is behind the biggest companies and what they’re doing with their money,” she added.
