In a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indonesian President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo expressed his hope for a stronger relationship with China, as the two countries commemorate 70 years of bilateral relations.

Jokowi called Monday after Xi sent a letter marking the long-lasting bilateral relationship.

“Thank you for the letter, President Xi. Regarding the commemoration of 70 years of our bilateral relations, I hope the relations and cooperation between [our] countries can grow stronger and more mutually beneficial,” he said, according to a press statement released by the Presidential Office on Tuesday.

During the phone call, Jokowi also expressed appreciation to the Chinese government for having recently welcomed Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno LP Marsudi and State-Owned Minister Erick Thohir to discuss several cooperation deals in healthcare and the economy.

“I appreciate the Chinese government’s efforts to strengthen strategic health cooperation, including in the coproduction and provision of COVID-19 vaccines,” Jokowi said.

The Indonesian President further asserted that despite the current pandemic, economic cooperation should not stop, as seen in the arrangement of a travel corridor between the two countries on August 21 to facilitate essential and urgent business trips.

In addition, Jokowi also thanked Xi during the phone call for stronger investment cooperation between Indonesia and China.
