In a presentation on Thursday afternoon, Sony offered fans a long-awaited first look at the PlayStation 5.

The new console represents a significant visual departure from previous PlayStation hardware. It is white, asymmetric and it has a collection of fins that stick out of the end.

The PlayStation 5 console is in line with the new controller—the so-called “DualSense” gamepad—announced earlier this year.

This holiday, Sony will offer two models of the PlayStation 5. The company said in a press release that there is a “standard” PlayStation 5, with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disk drive, and a “Digital Version” without a disk drive.

The digital version, as seen above, is symmetrical while the regular version has a bump where the disk drive is located.

The price difference between the two versions is still unknown, but the functional difference is obvious: the “digital model” is unable to read disks, while the standard model can.

In practice, that means that the Digital Edition can only play downloaded games—the latest step being taken by the video game industry to move away from physical video gameplay.
