The 122nd Independence Day of the Philippines is being commemorated all over the nation today, even in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Today is a good time to reflect and be inspired by leadership and courage.

“I said that I can sum up the state of the nation in two words, free and hopeful. We are free because we decided collectively to be free. Nothing could stand in the way of our freedom thereafter. And we have reason to be hopeful because now we realize that united we have the power to accomplish what we wish.”

Corazon Aquino

The heroes responsible for our freedom were great people who understood the value of leadership, service, and liberty. I believe that the most successful leaders and entrepreneurs have the same characteristics that are present in the heart of our heroes.

What are the characteristics of our heroes from the past that would help the business leaders of today achieve independence in their respective fields?

Courage

Independence can not be achieved without exercising our ability and increasing our readiness to make hard decisions. The attempts to avoid mistakes at all cost prevents us from ever achieving results. We must depend on those who are brave enough to face challenges until we are courageous enough to do the same thing.

Leadership takes courage. The courage you have will inspire your team. As a leader, you need to be positive to begin finding ways to encourage your team if they are drowning in workload or have low morale.

Collaboration

Our heroes succeeded in gaining our freedom because they work together. It’s the same in leading people, it is important to work with others and trust them. You, as a leader, have to remember that you can’t do everything on your own. We all know that two heads are better than one. Sharing of ideas encourages feedback and new insights from each member of the team.

Nurturing collaboration shows your team that you have confidence in their abilities, and this can lead to positive workplace morale. Collaborating with them would make them feel appreciated and trusted.

Commitment

Commitment is an inspiring and engaging quality of leadership. Success is close at hand if you keep working and fighting for it. Our heroes didn’t give up on their fight for freedom and neither should you in your objectives.

Showing your commitment gives others an example to follow, and leads to greater loyalty and respect for you as a leader. Set your tone of commitment, and others will follow suit. Remember, if you expect your team to work hard and do quality work, you’ll need to lead by example.

Leaders are modern heroes in their own way. Be courageous, collaborate, and stay committed to your vision!
