Without a doubt, the world is totally different from just a few months ago. The COVID-19 pandemic compelled many companies to switch to remote work. Although remote work can be the ultimate working scenario for employees, many managers find it difficult to deal with. However, it is the way forward for the job and managers must adapt to make the situation work for their teams.

How can you manage your team and keep your employees productive? Here are three best practices:

Communicate, communicate, communicate

One of the top three challenges of remote work is communication. Working remotely means that you and your team don’t have a chance to chat. Maybe that doesn’t sound like a big deal. But it’s probably vital to your team, and it’s an effective way to build a relationship and solve any problems quickly and efficiently.

As a manager, be responsive and available to your team. Using different tools to keep your team connected may not be as powerful as face-to-face interactions but it helps. Teams can use Skype, Zoom, FaceTime, or whatever app your team is more comfortable with. In our company, we use Skype.

Managers should also schedule regular check-ins, as well as one-on-one meetings, to stay connected with everyone.

Flexibility is the key

Teams need flexibility. While we recommend regular check-ins and one-on-one meetings, managers should be considerate in scheduling these and be flexible with time especially with employees who have kids at home they need to homeschool. Meetings should be planned out in advance so everyone can make arrangements and manage things at home before the meeting.

Having a structure like a daily routine or schedule for each team member would help them be flexible in other areas of their work and better at managing their time and maintaining work-life balance. These days, the daily structure also provides a sense of normalcy that can help to ease anxiety.

You do have to remember that everybody’s schedules have changed drastically. As a result, the members of your team may not always be available during normal working hours. As long as they do quality work, trust and appreciate them.

Health first

We live in a rapidly developing culture, which teaches us to work first. But sometimes we have to put health first. After all, if your team don’t take care of themselves, how will they get the time to focus on their work?

Allowing employees to work from their homes is taking care of their health. Also, make sure your team members get help, both mentally and physically, if they need it, even when they’re working remotely. Almost every annual report says that people are the biggest asset of their company. This pandemic is testing the authenticity of that. There is no better time than now to put our employees health first.
